Open Up to the World of Clinical Exercise

Clinical exercise is centred around building strength and improving balance, control, and flexibility, helping you to feel, move, and perform better. By focusing on these aspects of a person’s physical function, it aims to enhance the body as a whole through its comprehensive and holistic approach. While much of the focus is around the aim of feeling better physically, many people also find that clinical exercise helps to improve their ability to perform day-to-day activities with added confidence.

What can Clinical Exercise & Pilates help with?

Physio prescribed exercises can assist in

  • Managing lower back, neck and spinal pain
  • Rehabilitating sporting injuries and spinal injuries
  • Improving whole body muscle tone and flexibility
  • Improving postural awareness and control
  • Increasing quality of movement to help in your sport, work or hobbies
  • Improving stomach muscle tone
  • Increasing body awareness

What can I expect from my Clinical Pilates Exercise Program?

A program specific to YOU

At The Physio Studio, our highly trained sports physiotherapists are qualified in using a range of exercises including strength training, the clinical Pilates method, and balance and flexibility training, and will establish a program specifically for you. Following a thorough initial assessment, we develop your program over a series of 1:1 sessions.

You are then ready to join our Studio Equipment classes. Participants who are experienced and confident with their program after attending a full course of sessions can then also elect to join as a casual studio member and access the studio equipment outside of class times.

Our Pilates Studio

Pilates Adelaide

We offer a fully equipped, air-conditioned Pilates studio where we run our EQUIP Pilates classes. Here, clients are able to attend the many supervised Pilates-based exercise classes scheduled throughout the week or 1:1 intensive sessions provided by our physiotherapists.

Our classes and sessions include using equipment such as Pilates reformers, chi balls, trapeze tables, balance balls, and more, making them fun as well as functional! We find that the use of equipment increases resistance to give clients an entire body workout while also aiming to improve core stability. Whether you’re experiencing back pain, neck pain, pain elsewhere in the body, or simply want to improve your core fitness, Pilates exercises— whether in group classes or 1:1— may be the strengthening workout your body has been waiting for you to try.

Our Team of Certified Pilates Instructors

Our Clinical Pilates program is run by our experienced team of physiotherapists with clinical knowledge and training in sports physiotherapy and Pilates. Members of the team are DMA Pilates Physiotherapists and also have training from the KX Academy, making them well-rounded and incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to Pilates.

The DMA method is considered the gold standard for clinical Pilates for physiotherapists. This Pilates model is unique in that it aims to understand the problems behind the symptoms that many people come to Pilates classes to try to address. Our director, physiotherapist Sean Bushby, is a level 4 DMA Pilates physiotherapist, while fellow The Physio Studio physiotherapist Scott Palmer holds a level 1 DMA Pilates certification. Our team of 6 experienced and knowledgeable physios at The Physio Studio can’t wait to meet you and get started on your Pilates journey!

Our Pilates Classes

All classes are fully supervised by our energetic and experienced physiotherapists and have a maximum of 6 clients per class.

EQUIP (Reformer Pilates)

Our reformer Pilates classes are named EQUIP as they equip you for better balance, movement, and endurance! Our EQUIP classes are our studio equipment clinical Pilates classes which include Pilates reformers among other equipment such as chi balls. If your aim is to learn Pilates exercises on a dedicated Pilates reformer, EQUIP is the class for you.

Vital

Your core muscles are vital, but Pilates reformers aren’t always vital to every Pilates session! Our Vital classes are mat-based, where exercises are done on mats on the floor. Proving equipment isn’t always necessary to a Pilates workout, mat Pilates in our Vital classes also aim to improve core muscle strength, endurance, and posture.

Pregnancy Pilates

Our studio equipment classes can accommodate prenatal exercise. Our physiotherapists can advise on what classes and exercises are suitable for you depending on your health, stage of pregnancy, and prenatal experience. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Our floor based Vital Pilates classes may also be appropriate during pregnancy.

Your Clinical Pilates Questions Answered

Yes! A variety of exercise class payment options exist, including discounts on term passes.

Clinical Pilates and reformer Pilates have similarities but differ in focus, application, and purpose. Clinical Pilates is prescribed and supervised by professionals such as our certified Pilates instructors, and is tailored to address individual needs and injuries while aiding in injury rehab and improving physical function.

Reformer Pilates is a type of Pilates exercise using specialised equipment. This form of Pilates targets strength, flexibility, and stability, and is generally used for general fitness rather than clinical rehabilitation.

How often you do clinical Pilates is ultimately up to you, however we generally suggest starting with one to two sessions per week. This suggestion may differ for you depending on factors such as your fitness level, any existing injuries or conditions, and so on. As you progress and develop strength, balance, and flexibility, you may wish to change how frequently you do clinical Pilates as well.

Clinical Pilates may be beneficial for people with a range of conditions or injuries, such as:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Joint injuries
  • Injury rehab
  • Sports injuries
  • Neurological conditions
  • Prenatal or postnatal care
